About Brian Obach

Brian Obach is a Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at New Paltz.  He specializes in the study of social movements, environmental sociology, the sociology of food and agriculture, and political economy.  He is the author of Organic Struggle (MIT Press 2015), an examination of the sustainable agriculture movement, and Labor and the Environmental Movement (MIT Press 2004), an analysis of cooperation and conflict between labor unions and environmentalists.  He has published articles in Sociological Perspectives, Organization and Environment, the Journal of Civil Society, Social Science Quarterly and other scholarly journals and popular publications. Dr. Obach has published several articles on pedagogy in the American Sociological Association’s teaching journal, Teaching Sociology. He is the former director of the Environmental Studies Program and Chair of the Department of Sociology at SUNY New Paltz. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is a member of the all-professor rock band, Questionable Authorities, and he is working towards an MFA in drawing and painting at SUNY New Paltz.
