About Ilarion Merculieff

Ilarion Merculieff was born on the Pribilof Island of St. Paul in Alaska, raised in a traditional Unangan (Aleut) way, and given the traditional name Kuuyux by the last Elder who held that name amongst his people. The name means a carrier of ancient knowledge into modern times, a messenger. He graduated from the University of Washington, having established the first Indigenous student education program there. Ilarion has served Unangan and other Indigenous peoples locally, nationally, and internationally over a fifty year career devoted to the environment, human rights, community wellness, economic development, and cultural enhancement.
